Come to the library tomorrow night for our second seed and seedling exchange. Meet other area gardeners and get some free seeds to get your garden started. More information and updates can be found here
There is a natural affinity between libraries and seeds. In an age when the genetic information inside a seed can be interchangeable with the information found in books, there may be a role for libraries in becoming "seed libraries" to preserve and share local heirloom varieties. As the genetic diversity and wealth of local varieties known as landraces continues to diminish in favor of a handful of varieties, libraries could help to maintain their local unique varieties in addition to providing a hub for a local gardening culture.
