Standing Rock tribal member George Gilland and his relative Sharon Rasmussen have written a couple of very interesting books. Along the Trail to Thunderhawk and The Road Back to Thunderhawk are written in novelized form, but the stories are those George learned during his life that he wanted to pass on.
The fact that they are written like historical fiction with dialogue took a little getting used to. Still, the stories at the core of these books add to what we know about the early history of the reservation. I remember visiting with the authors more than a decade ago when the first book was published. Now that I have read the books, it would be great to visit with them again about some of the stories they have written about. Two very interesting books from what they title the Red Eagle Series. Hopefully there will be more to come.
