In June of 1974 a treaty conference was held in Wakpala, South Dakota on Standing Rock. According to documents, representatives from 97 indigenous nations attended and the proceedings were a step on the road to the later United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Sitting Bull College Library has a collection of photographs from that event.
This week, another treaty meeting is being held in Wakpala, South Dakota.
Most of the below photographs from the 1974 treaty meeing are unidentified. We are working on verifying the people in the photographs.
