Books on the History of Standing Rock

The history of Standing Rock can be found within an almost unlimited selection of books. A comprehensive "one volume" history of Standing Rock really doesn't exist, but there are a few books that provide good places to get started.

In the 1970s, the Standing Rock Tribe published a 171 page pictorial history featuring a vast collection of historic photographs, a short narrative history, timelines and selected primary source documents. Iyan Woslate Wo'oyake (Standing Rock Stories) was republished just a few years ago and the library has several copies. It is relatively rare, but remains the only history book published in print by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. A number of years before it was republished, the library scanned a rare copy of the original 1970s publication in its collection that can be read here. Copyright of Standing Rock Sioux Tribe applies. Additional resources are available online on the website of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

A few years ago, Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Historian Ladonna Brave Bull Allard published a 40 page booklet titled The Pte Oyate Buffalo Nation. While dealing more generally with the broader Lakota/Dakota/Nakota Oceti Sakowin, it has a focus on Standing Rock by this important local historian. It can be read or printed online here

Dononvin Sprague has published two books under the popular Arcadia Press Images of America series: Standing Rock Sioux and Standing Rock Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nation. The former contains historic photographs from the 1800s to the 1970s, while the latter is more contemporary and features many current photographs. For each book, Donovin, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, visited Standing Rock to gather many never before seen photographs, several of which are from Sitting Bull College Library.

Another title is The History and Culture of the Standing Rock Oyate . It is a good solid history that was written through a collaboration between North Dakota Department of Public Instruction and the Standing Rock Tribe. The 100 page history features narrative, timelines, photos, maps and primary source documents that give a good general overview of the Standing Rock story. Print copies are available at the library and the full-text can be accessed or downloaded at this link
