One Hundred Years Since World War One and Veterans Day

Sunday is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, a war which saw large numbers of participants from Standing Rock and in part led to Native American citizenship in 1924. Veteran's Day is a time to thank and honor all veterans past and present for their service and sacrifice.Thank you to all those past and present who have put themselves in harms way for the rest of us.

The library has many historical primary and secondary sources dealing with Standing Rock's participation in World War One and all other military engagements. One resource, by French historian and frequent Standing Rock visitor, Thomas Grillot is available online at the following link. The Meaning of Patriotism: Memories of World War One on the Standing Rock Reservation by Thomas Grillot draws on his research on Standing Rock and was written especially so that people here could read the results of his research. Further research has brought about the recent publication of a more detailed account in First Americans: U.S. Patriotism in Indian Country After World War I. Copies are available at the library.
